Week 2

 ●      Tell a story about a happy/challenging/funny/meaningful moment from the week

A meaningful moment from the week was asking some friends if they'd want any specific shirt designs and knowing that I would be making images that people would appreciate. One of my friends drew the chicken (second image) and I'm going to make a shirt with their drawing on it.

●      What have you learned?

I've learned that it's nice to be working on multiple screen printing designs so I can have a variety to work with when there are some that are more technically challenging and some that are really fun and happy.

●      Reflection on progress towards goals from week 1

I haven't sold anything yet because I'm mostly just planning stuff out and cutting out designs right now, but I will be screen printing on clothes next week so I will get to give people shirts!

I've been trying out painting on clothes which is challenging because I have to be very focused and it's easy to mess up, but I haven't screen printed on jeans so I thought that technique would be best.

I could be better with time management still, but I felt productive when I was on campus especially on Thursday because I have one design ready to print and one almost ready to print.

●      Questions you have

Not really a question but I find that it means more to me when I'm giving people I know screen prints and I'd rather give it as a gift then ask them to pay for it.

●      1-2 images/photos

Sun/moon design I drew out and will be screen printing next week:

  1. It seems like you're finding a lot of different kinds of satisfaction with this project, Thea. I hear you about the challenges of giving vs selling. Making art sits in a funny in between space for those. That said, don't undervalue what you make. I hope you and Essie and Divine are learning from each other as well.

    1. Yes. Gifting is very satisfying. Thank you!

  2. I like your idea of having multiple projects going at once. I wonder if this helps with getting "unstuck" on one design/process while you tackle another. In response to your thoughts of selling vs. gifting, I wonder if you might find a balance if you were selling for the benefit of something you care about--using one gift to create another.

    1. Yeah, I definitely would want to do that and I hope to continue working on that so that I can fundraise for organizations or actions.

  3. I was introduced to screen printing by Nance on a 9th grade class trip - and thought it was just so much fun - and surprisingly easy to do. The fussy work of cutting out the designs is the hardest part - once you are free to apply the inks it's just plain fun. I can't wait to see your designs in completion. We miss you in C&C - I hope you are doing well.
